The game Thursday night between Kennedy and Katella, a battle for second place in the hotly contested Empire League race, turned out to be no contest at all.

Kennedy’s Kelvin Beatty rushed for 133 yards and scored four touchdowns, two of them on his first two carries, and led the Fighting Irish to a 35-15 victory in front of about 2,100 at Glover Stadium.

Beatty scored his first touchdown on Kennedy’s initial play from scrimmage, racing untouched down the right sideline for a 68-yard score.

After a poor Katella punt, the Fighting Irish (6-3, 3-1) took only two plays to score their next touchdown, on Beatty’s three-yard run, to make it 14-0.

“We knew this was a big game toward the playoffs, and we came prepared,” Beatty said.

Katella (3-6, 2-2) had a chance to get back into the game after recovering a Kennedy fumble at the Fighting Irish 45-yard line, but running back Marlon Roman was stopped just short of the goal line on a fourth-and-one play.

Kennedy then drove 99 yards in nine plays, ending with receiver Steve Yaden scoring on a 12-yard reverse. Yaden, fifth in the county in receiving, had five catches for 132 yards.
