Public Radio Was First

The headline over Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez’s Oct. 28 Around the Dial radio column, “Rock en espanol finds its first small niche on an English-language FM station,” caught my attention.

I thought perhaps she was going to write about the excellent “Travel Tips for Aztlan” hosted by Mark Torres on KPFK-FM (90.7) on Saturdays from 10 p.m. to midnight or the music we’ve been playing on “Frequencia Latina,” hosted by Juan Morillo from 8 to 10 p.m. on Sundays on public radio station KCSN-FM (88.5).

You can’t imagine my surprise when the sole focus of the article was on a commercial radio station playing the music we’ve been sharing with listeners for almost a year. “Frequencia Latina” is a bilingual show dedicated to alternative music by Latin Americans living in the U.S. In short, it is the music that our friends on the commercial end of the FM dial now deem worthy of public attention.
