SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Two former employees of a Moorpark recreation supply company were arrested on suspicion of stealing $250,000 worth of merchandise between 1997 and March 1999, authorities said Friday.

Rocco Attolico, 58, and Armando Padilla, 37, are accused of taking inventory from Variflex, a company that designs and distributes roller-skates, roller-blades, helmets, snowboards and other recreation supplies, authorities said.

Both men were fired in March, police said.

A seven-month investigation by police and company officials allegedly found that illegal sales had been made at the warehouse, inventory lists had been tampered with and products had been replaced with cheaper items, authorities said.

Attolico, a Sylmar resident who was the company’s vice president of manufacturing and distribution, surrendered to deputies in Moorpark on Friday.

Padilla, his former assistant, was arrested Thursday at his home in Oxnard.

Both men have since posted bail and were released from jail.
