Hebrew Classes Available as Part of Literacy Effort

Share

More than 1,400 Hebrew classes will be offered to Jews in North America this month to promote Hebrew literacy. The program, “Read Hebrew America/Canada,” is the most extensive campaign of its kind organized by the National Jewish Outreach Program.

Organizers say only 20% of American Jews speak Hebrew, and hope to raise that figure. About 20,000 Jews--many of them unaffiliated with any temple--are expected to participate in North America, up from 15,000 when the program began last year.

Classes are being held at about 1,000 locations in the United States. In Orange County, participating centers include Hillel of Orange County in Fullerton, Chabad of West Orange County in Huntington Beach, North County Chabad Center in Yorba Linda and University Synagogue and Beth Jacob Congregation, both in Irvine.
