From Staff and Wire Reports

Red Sox closer Tom Gordon has been told by Angel team physician Lewis Yocum that he needs surgery to replace a ligament on his right elbow, a procedure that probably would force him to miss at least all of next season, according to Gordon’s agent, Jeff Boras. . . . The umpires’ union began its grievance hearing to regain 22 jobs and owners immediately asked arbitrator Alan Symonette to dismiss the case. Most of the umpires who were terminated Sept. 2 attended the three-hour hearing in Philadelphia. After owners moved to dismiss, the union asked for additional time to respond. Symonette told the union to submit its reply by Nov. 16 and told owners to submit their rebuttal three days later. Symonette said the hearing will resume Dec. 13-16, and said he expected to rule on the owners’ motion by then.
