SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Villa Park’s Marquis Colvin rushed for a career-high 287 yards and four touchdowns in 20 carries as Villa Park cruised past Canyon, 49-19, in a key Century League game at El Modena Friday.

Teammate Daniel Munoz added 98 yards and three touchdowns in 10 carries.

Canyon’s Gerald Harvey tallied 221 yards and two touchdowns in 31 carries.

With the victory, the Spartans (7-2, 4-0 in league) set up a potential showdown for the league title. Villa Park ends the regular season next Thursday against Santa Ana Valley, which can also improve to 4-0 in league with a victory over El Modena tonight.

“I never thought we’d come here and score 49 points,” said Villa Park Coach Pat Mahoney. “We just wanted to get a win and start thinking about next week.”

Colvin scored the first 20 points for the Spartans, who are averaging 52 points in league games. After touchdown runs of 19 and 36 yards in the first quarter gave the Spartans a 12-0 lead, Harvey rushed for a five-yard score and Ryan Keys connected on the first extra point of the game to cut the Spartan lead to 12-7.

Villa Park cushioned its lead when Colvin rushed for his third touchdown in the half, a four-yard run with 58 seconds remaining, and added a two-point conversion to send the Spartans to the locker room with a 20-7 lead.

Munoz and Harvey traded touchdowns in the third quarter, but even after Harvey’s two-yard scoring run cut the lead to 15 points, Villa Park instantly regained the momentum when Bryan Arguello returned the ensuing kickoff 63 yards.

Munoz’s 12-yard touchdown run three plays later, to start the fourth quarter, made it, 35-13.

Colvin could do no wrong. Even after fumbling in the backfield on the Spartans’ next possession, he picked up the ball and sprinted 65 yards for the score.

“He’s just an explosive runner,” said Mahoney. “And he’s got a great line. Last year, I said our line was the best since I’ve been here and this one, with Jeff Anderson and Ricky Gonzalez, might be just as good.”
