RON DAYNE

Running back, Wisconsin

Dayne has an NCAA record 1,088 rushing attempts, and after he rumbled for 222 yards against Purdue, the only question left is who will hand him the Heisman Trophy in New York. Dayne is 98 yards short of the NCAA record for career rushing yards, and barring injury, he will set a new standard in the Badgers’ season finale against Iowa, which gives up yardage by the truckload.

DREW BREES

Quarterback, Purdue

The junior passed for 350 yards and a touchdown, ran for a career-high 85 yards and two other scores, but the Boilermakers lost again, dooming his chances.

JOE HAMILTON

Quarterback, Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jacket standout had perhaps his poorest game of the season in a loss to Virginia, whose Thomas Jones looked like a more viable Heisman candidate.

PETER WARRICK

Receiver, Florida State

He had the week off, but kept in the news with the publication of a letter he wrote to the local paper apologizing for his role in a shopping scandal. You wouldn’t suppose Warrick has advisors helping him reshape his career after the damaging incident, would you?

TRAVIS PRENTICE

Running back, Miami of Ohio

Big numbers against questionable competition, dashing any Heisman hopes.
