Jetliner Crash Kills All 18 on Board

A Mexican airline passenger jet exploded shortly after takeoff in south-central Mexico, killing all 18 people on board, local government officials and media reports said. The accident occurred at 7 p.m. near Uruapan, about 180 miles west of Mexico City. The DC-9 belonged to Taesa, a commercial carrier. The Notimex news agency said Flight 725 had flown from Tijuana to Guadalajara and Uruapan and was headed to Mexico City. Most of the 91 passengers who boarded the jet in Tijuana had disembarked before the plane left Uruapan.
