Veterans Day Events

Today is Veterans Day. It originated in the armistice that ended World War I, effective on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. From a solemn service at El Toro Memorial Cemetery in Lake Forest to a motorcycle run in Yorba Linda, Orange County pauses to honor the men and women who have served their country. A look at a few of the events scheduled:

FULLERTON

A ceremony hosted by the Fullerton Claude Payne American Legion Post 142, the Fullerton Elks Club and the city begins at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Park. It features the Fullerton Union High School drum group. All veterans are invited to march in a parade beginning at 10:25 a.m. at the northwest corner of the Fullerton High School campus.

LAGUNA WOODS

Leisure World residents celebrate the day with patriotic music by the 60-member Huntington Beach Concert Band. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. Tickets are $3.

LAKE FOREST

A patriotic observance is at 11 a.m. at El Toro Memorial Park, 25751 Trabuco Road. The service is organized by American Legion Post 257, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2660, Jewish War Veterans of the USA Post 680 and the South Coast chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

MISSION VIEJO

A memorial service at 10:30 a.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way, features a flag salute and tribute to all those in the armed forces.

SEAL BEACH

The Seal Beach American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars host a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Eisenhower Park, next to the pier. A Marine Corps color guard and a Marina High School choral group are featured.

WESTMINSTER

The city’s senior center at 8200 Westminster Blvd. hosts a lunch. Veterans who bring proof of their service eat free of charge. Information: (714) 895-2878.

YORBA LINDA

A biker run is one of the featured events for the holiday at the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace. Motorcyclists drive up to the library at 10:30 a.m. Other events include the playing of taps by an 89-year-old musician billed as the oldest bugler in the nation.
