Edison’s Victory Over Oilers Is Likely the Chargers’ Last Hurrah

Share

Richard Schwartz threw for 328 yards and Darryl Poston broke Edison’s single-season rushing touchdown record as the Chargers defeated host Huntington Beach, 35-14, Friday.

Despite finishing the season with a 7-3 record, the Chargers (2-3 in league) have slim playoff hopes. Edison finished fifth in the Sunset League and could receive an at-large berth only if fourth-place Fountain Valley does as well. With the strength of Division I, it is unlikely the Sunset League will receive two of the three available at-large berths.

“We went 6-3-1 two years ago and didn’t get in,” Charger Coach Dave White said. “What happens, happens.”

The Chargers gained 474 yards thanks mostly to the junior duo of Schwartz and Poston. Schwartz completed 11 of 14 passes, five of them for 30 yards or more. Poston caught an 86-yard touchdown pass in addition to rushing for 112 yards and three more scores. His 28 rushing touchdowns this season are two better than Kerwin Bell’s 26 in 1979.

The Oilers (4-6, 0-5) gained 408 yards, including a 268-yard rushing performance by senior Shaun Shuck.
