FIVE KEY MOMENTS

Share

1 Chris Griffith hadn’t missed a field goal all season--as long as he got the ball past the line of scrimmage. But six of his kicks had been blocked, including a 27-yarder in the fourth quarter that would have put UCLA ahead, 23-17. So when he lined up for a 22-yarder in overtime, it was hardly a gimme. It was hardly ordinary when he made it too. It delivered the win.

2 Joey Strycula has been the solid but unheralded member of the secondary, the only Bruin defensive back to start all 10 games but rarely a star. Until Saturday. His interception of Marques Tuiasosopo’s third-down pass near the goal line prevented a Washington score in the first overtime and set the stage for Griffith to win it on the subsequent possession.

3 Oscar Cabrera, Brian Polak, James Ghezzi, Micah Webb and Bryce Bohlander walked off the field after the game. That they were able to, rather than being carted off, is the important thing for UCLA. That is the Bruins’ depth on the offensive line for next week against USC: one player at each position, with Ed Anderson to be used in case of emergency.

4 Ricky Manning’s aggressiveness has gotten him burned on pass coverages this season, biting on short fakes and giving up deep routes in what coaches write off as freshman mistakes. But it became a positive in the second quarter, when he charged in untouched on a cornerback blitz, hit Tuiasosopo from behind and caused a fumble. Another true freshman, Marcus Reese, recovered at the Husky three, and the Bruins scored on the first play. That gave UCLA a 14-7 lead.

5 DeShaun Foster had six carries on the Bruins’ second possession--one more than the previous five games combined. Not only that, but he carried productively, a rare, but much-needed, sighting for the weak UCLA running game. Three of those six attempts were worth at least seven yards, including the eight-yarder that capped the drive and provided a 7-7 tie, and the early rushes went a long way to establishing the return of Foster.
