It’s All Classic Olympio in Moccasin

What was supposed to be a match race in the $100,000 Moccasin Stakes wasn’t much of a contest.

Classic Olympio, the 9-5 second choice, went to the front under jockey Alex Solis, repelled a mild challenge from 3-5 favorite Abby Girl, then pulled away late to win by three lengths in 1:22 1/5 for the seven furlongs.

Owned by Verne Winchell’s VHW Stables and trained by Ron McAnally, the 2-year-old daughter of Olympio has won three in a row after finishing second in her first two starts.

After skipping the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, Classic Olympio will get her chance around two turns in next month’s $200,000 Hollywood Starlet--and she appears the type who should be just fine with added distance.

“We’ve thought all along that this is a nice filly,” McAnally said after his 98th stakes win at the Inglewood track. “I remember calling [Winchell] one day and telling him that she was all right.

“Only time will tell, but we still feel that way and this was a good race for her today.”

Making her first start since finishing second to Chilukki in the Oak Leaf Stakes five weeks earlier at Santa Anita, Abby Girl did break last in the field of six, but had no other visible excuses. She finished 6 1/2 lengths clear of Bold Feat, then came Vote Getter, Gilly’s Ghazi and Trust Your Heart.

Solis, who became the seventh rider to win 1,000 races at Hollywood Park when Jekyll And Hyde took the fourth race, believes Classic Olympio will run long.

“I definitely think she can get a route,” he said.

Favorites were beaten in all six legs of the pick six Sunday at Hollywood Park, so there will be a two-day carryover of $437,033.01 on Wednesday.

The biggest surprise was provided by Braconne, a 20-1 shot, who backed into the victory when original winner Hurricane’s Eye was disqualified for interference with Able Easy and Classic Career in the stretch.
