Even as Brian Griese makes improvement from a shoulder injury, and despite Denver’s loss at Seattle on Sunday night, veteran Chris Miller will remain the Bronco starting quarterback for at least another week.

On a team whose playoff hopes have virtually drowned in a sea of injuries, Miller has played well the last two weeks, a 33-17 victory over San Diego and a 20-17 loss to Seattle on Sunday night.

“Obviously, Chris will go,” Coach Mike Shanahan said of the Broncos’ next game, next Monday night at home against Oakland. “Chris has been playing extremely well, and Brian will be his backup. If Brian suffers a setback, then Jeff [Brohm] would be the backup.”

Also, Denver free safety Eric Brown probably is lost for the season because of a knee injury. He is the ninth Bronco starter to suffer a major injury this season.

Jacksonville running back Fred Taylor will probably be limited in practice this week and Coach Tom Coughlin said he may tinker with his offense to provide a spark if Taylor can’t play next weekend against New Orleans.

Taylor aggravated his left hamstring in the Jaguars’ 6-3 victory over the Ravens on Sunday. He was scheduled for an MRI on Monday.

It will mean increased work for backup running back Stacey Mack and could signal a lesser role for James Stewart, who struggled for 25 yards in 18 carries against Baltimore.

“If we have to do some changing and tinkering with the offense, then we’ll do some,” Coughlin said.

Taylor was sidelined three games last month with the same injury. He has played only three complete games this season.

In Taylor’s absence, Stewart has rushed for a team-leading 532 yards but has averaged just 3.4 yards a carry.
