The City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to allow a zoning change by Maple School on two parcels on Truslow Avenue where high-density housing development would occur, an action feared by the surrounding community and the school district.

The 100 and 200 blocks of East Truslow and Walnut avenues will become R-5 zone classification, from M-G, C-H and R-3. This means instead of developing a smaller number of units per apartment, larger buildings with more units could be constructed, welcoming smaller families and younger residents south of the Transportation Center.

Neighboring residents said that higher-density housing would mean an increase in crime and overcrowding at the local school. But city officials disagreed, saying a possible development would be a step in allowing the community to become a buffer between downtown and the business area around Orangefair Marketplace.
