Performing Animals

* On behalf of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, I would like to respond to the letter “Circus Animals” (Ventura County Letters, Nov. 10) regarding performing animals.

The legislation mentioned relies on emotion rather than fact to support the notion that elephants in circuses and traveling shows pose a danger to the general public. It is a “solution” in search of a nonexistent problem.

Ringling Bros. does not tolerate the abuse or mistreatment of any animals. In fact, animals are among the most important and valuable part of any Ringling Bros. circus experience and it would be foolhardy to do anything but give them the very best of care.

The animals that perform with Ringling Bros. are trained solely through positive reinforcement, an approach that involves a great deal of patience, repetition, praise and food rewards. Performances are carefully designed to mimic the animals’ natural athletic abilities and reflect their individual personalities in an entertainment setting. The animals are never forced to perform any maneuver that could cause them harm.

For millions of Americans, the opportunity to see rare and exotic animals is a unique and treasured part of the circus experience. When an audience is touched by the wonder, beauty and intelligence of these animals in person, it heightens their interest in animals and they are moved to care about protecting endangered species and their habitats.
