Superior Court Judge John C. Woolley is scheduled to hear opening arguments today in the lawsuit filed against the city by former City Manager Arthur Simonian, who is trying regain his job.

Simonian alleges that the City Council violated the Brown Act during the closed session meeting Sept. 7 when it fired him. He has also accused the council of violating open meeting laws during an August meeting when he was placed on administrative leave.

Supporters of Simonian were at the Alta Vista Golf Club on Monday at an event to raise funds for his legal defense. The city has denied the allegations made in his suits and has filed a lawsuit against Simonian seeking about $300,000 it says he paid himself without council authorization. Today’s trial is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Department C6 of the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
