Nearly $800,000 in federal grant money is available to help Orange County’s estimated 15,000 homeless people, according to a Red Cross official.

Grant applications for emergency food and shelter programs are available through the Red Cross, said Paula Zintl, Red Cross human resources manager. The Red Cross is a member of the Orange County Emergency Food and Shelter Board, which will review and grant the funds received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“There are a tremendous number of people homeless and hungry here,” said Zintl, despite the county’s reputation for affluence and low unemployment rate of 2.5% in October.

Statewide, unemployment was 4.8%.

The application deadline is Monday.

Orange County agencies last year provided 1.3 million meals, 28,600 nights of shelter and paid mortgage or rent for 178 families.
