The number continues to rise on the price of fixing the deteriorating schools in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

The original estimate of $127 million, one that had residents gasping, is officially a thing of the past. The new number on the table is $163 million.

A November progress update by the committee deciding what repairs to make included new numbers prepared by Fred Good of PJHM Architects Southwest, based on changes made by the facilities committee.

The new report includes the costs of air-conditioning in classrooms, seismic improvements and teaching walls at the elementary level, said Mike Fine, assistant superintendent in charge of finances.
