Archie’s Basket in Final Second Gives Pepperdine a Victory Over Fresno State

Tezale Archie scored with six-tenths of a second left to give Pepperdine a 70-68 victory over Fresno State on Tuesday night at Fresno.

Fresno State (1-1) tied the score with eight seconds left as Melvin Ely made one of two free throws. Ely then blocked Archie’s final shot but was called for goaltending.

Fresno, playing without returning top scorer Courtney Alexander, had 24 turnovers in the loss.

Pepperdine (2-0) rallied from a 40-37 halftime deficit to take a 60-57 lead with just over five minutes left in the game. But Fresno came back with an 8-0 run to lead, 65-60, with 3:25.

After a basket by Nick Shepherd cut the margin to three points, Ely was called for a technical foul, and Pepperdine ran off four more unanswered points. Larry Abney’s free throws gave Fresno State the lead again with 2:15 remaining but Armstrong countered with a short jumper to put Pepperdine up, 68-67.

Pepperdine was led by Brandon Armstrong with 17 and Archie with 13.

Larry Abney led Fresno State with 16 points and Demetrius Porter added 15.
