A 16-year-old Little Rock High School student was killed Wednesday when the driver of the 1994 Honda in which he was a passenger lost control, careened off a local street and landed in a desert field, a Los Angeles county sheriff’s deputy said.

Authorities said it appeared that the car was full of Littlerock High School students who had left school earlier in the day.

The identity of the boy who was killed was withheld pending notification of his family. He was pronounced dead at the crash site at 47th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard around 12:45 p.m., said Deputy Ed Raulston of the sheriff’s Palmdale Station.

“It appears that a female driver never negotiated the second curve in an S turn and [the car] went off the roadway and rolled over several times,” said Lt. Ed Dvorak of the Palmdale Station. “Some of the occupants weren’t wearing seat belts.”

Other teenagers in the car who were injured--including three girls and a boy--were taken to area hospitals.

Those most seriously hurt, including the driver, were flown by helicopter to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, Raulston said.

There was no evidence of drug or alcohol use or of any mechanical problems with the car, Raulston said. The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
