MOTOR SPORTS

Jay Drake, formerly of Val Verde, never really had the opportunity to defend his championship in the 50th annual Home Depot Turkey Night Grand Prix 100-lap midget race Thursday night at Irwindale Speedway.

Drake, who lives in Indianapolis, finished 10th even though the car’s brakes stopped functioning on the fifth lap.

“The pedal just hit the floor, and nothing,” said Drake, who qualified seventh. “You try not to run over the guys in front of you and hope nothing crazy happens.”

Drake finished fifth in the United States Auto Club MCI Worldcom National Midget points standings.

Greg Edenholm of Agoura failed in his bid to capture the USAC MCI Worldcom TQ midget points championship. On the first lap of the 20-lap feature, his car touched wheels with J.J. Ercse’s car. Edenholm spun into the first-turn retaining wall.
