Yzerman Gets His 600th Goal

Steve Yzerman, with a power-play goal in the first period, became the 11th player in NHL history to score 600 goals, reaching the milestone Friday night in the Detroit Red Wings’ 4-2 victory over Edmonton at Detroit.

Yzerman, in his 17th season with the Red Wings, topped 900 assists last week and joins Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Marcel Dionne and Mark Messier as the only NHL players with 600 goals and 900 assists. Yzerman has 1,503 points to rank seventh.

Pittsburgh 5, Ottawa 0--Jaromir Jagr scored three goals in a 7:01 span of the first period at Pittsburgh as the Penguins routed the Senators.

It was Jagr’s first hat trick in nearly three years, and he also assisted on Matthew Barnaby’s goal for his 900th NHL point. Jagr, who has 18 goals in 19 games, increased his league-leading point total to 38.

Penguin goalie Tom Barrasso, playing for the first time since Oct. 8, stopped 20 shots for the 35th shutout of his career. Barrasso suffered a sprained knee ligament in the second game of the season.

Phoenix 7, Colorado 0--Jeremy Roenick scored three goals for the second consecutive night as the Coyotes routed the Avalanche at Phoenix. Roenick has eight points in two games and lead the Coyotes with 14 goals in 18 games.

Philadelphia 3, Toronto 2--Mark Recchi’s goal with 51.5 seconds left in overtime gave the Flyers, who lost a two-goal lead late in the third period, a victory over the Maple Leafs at Philadelphia.

Vancouver 2, Boston 2--Steve Heinze scored at 7:47 of the third period to give the Bruins a tie against the Canucks at Boston. Canuck goalie Garth Snow made 34 saves, including three in overtime.

Washington 1, Nashville 0--Ulf Dahlen scored the game’s only goal on a power play with 15:48 to play at Washington, and backup goalie Craig Billington made 19 saves for his second consecutive shutout.

St. Louis 2, Buffalo 0--Mike Eastwood scored a goal and assisted on another at Buffalo as the Blues ended the Sabres’ three-game winning streak.

Florida 6, New York Rangers 2--The Panthers scored four goals in an 11-minute span in the second period and Trevor Kidd made 39 saves as they beat the Rangers at Sunrise, Fla.

Carolina 3, Tampa Bay 3--Robert Kron scored a power-play goal early in the third period at Tampa, Fla., to give Hurricanes a tie. The Lightning is 0-5-5 in its last 10 games with Carolina.

New York Ranger defenseman Brian Leetch is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks because of a broken right forearm he suffered against Tampa Bay Wednesday night. . . . Colorado center Peter Forsberg makes his season debut tonight against the Calgary Flames at Denver. Forsberg was sidelined the first two months of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
