Clinton Hitting Cybermall for Shopping This Year

WASHINGTON — President Clinton said Saturday he will shop online for some Christmas gifts this year and believes electronic commerce will benefit consumers and the economy if used with care and caution.
“One of the key reasons our economy continues to thrive, with the longest peacetime expansion in history, is that we’re making the most of new technologies,” the president said in his weekly radio address.
In past holiday seasons, Clinton did most of his Christmas shopping in last-minute dashes to shopping malls. But he said he intends to change with the times.
Online shopping not only benefits consumers and large established retailers but it also opens a world of opportunity for local artisans and small entrepreneurs, he said.
In the Republican radio response, Rep. David Dreier (R-San Dimas) said the upcoming World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle presents a golden opportunity for expanding electronic commerce worldwide.
