Cool Breezes Expected to Bring Relief to Valley

The San Fernando Valley baked under near record-high temperatures for a second straight day Thursday.

But forecasters said heat-weary residents can expect relief in the form of cooling coastal winds just in time for the weekend.

The sea breezes are expected to kick up after high pressure weakens over the desert, sending temperatures down by at least 10 degrees along the shore today, said Stacey Johnstone, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.

By Saturday, inland valley areas also will begin to cool with low temperatures dipping into the upper 50s to mid 60s this weekend. Highs will range from the upper 80s to low 90s.

That’s a break from unseasonable heat, which Thursday sent the mercury soaring to 100 degrees in Burbank; 102 in Northridge; 101 in Van Nuys, and 104 degrees in Woodland Hills, Johnstone said.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said there had been no heat-related problems reported in the San Fernando Valley, unusual when temperatures hit highs late in the year.

However, in Corona, a wildfire moved rapidly across hillsides south of the city, charring about 250 acres of brush and citrus groves, damaging two houses and prompting the evacuation of more than 200 homes.
