Defense Claims Insanity in Slaying of Granada Hills Man in Moorpark

A 30-year-old Moorpark man has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to murder charges resulting from a deadly shooting over a Nintendo game last month.

Paul Myers allegedly gunned down his 26-year-old brother-in-law, Jason Weaver of Granada Hills, during a heated dispute over possession of the game.

Myers’ mother testified against her son during a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Ventura County Superior Court.

Two psychologists will examine Myers in an attempt to determine his mental state the night of the shooting. A jury will decide the type of crime committed and use the psychologists’ examination to conclude whether Myers’ sanity was compromised the day of the shooting.

“If the person is found to be not sane, then he would be hospitalized instead of imprisoned,” Deputy Public Defender Doug Daily said. “He has a history of mental illness.”
