UCLA GAME REPORT

Share

1. The Bruins got close enough to smell Flowers, just not to stop him. Even with eight UCLA players back--some were linebackers and so were not as far back--Delvon Flowers caught a short pass from Griffin Goodman and then picked his way through the UCLA defense for a 49-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left that provided the win. Don’t worry if you missed it. Bob Toledo will be able to remember every step of it . . . for the next 49 years.

2. UCLA was deep in its territory, starting at the 11, but leading by 10 points with 10 1/2 minutes remaining when tailback Jermaine Lewis went up the middle. He fumbled. Arizona State’s Solomon Bates, the 17-year-old freshman from Moreno Valley starting at linebacker, recovered. The Sun Devils scored five plays later to get within three.

3. The Sun Devils trailed, 21-7, and had just put in their third quarterback, Goodman. It was late in the third quarter. But J.R. Redmond, the star running back from Carson High, responded with an 80-yard touchdown run down the right sideline. The much-needed spark became the first of three touchdowns for Arizona State in the final 17:09.

4. Danny Farmer breaks two tackles and a record on an 85-yard touchdown pass play from Cory Paus on the opening play of the second quarter. That gives him 2,588 career yards, moving him ahead of Kevin Jordan and into first place on the school’s career yardage list. That also gives the Bruins a 14-0 lead.

5. The great moment becomes even greater. Phoenix native Keith Brown, thrilled by the start in front of family and friends, bursts up the middle on the fourth play from scrimmage and goes 50 yards for a touchdown. That was set up by his 13-yard reception on a screen pass. It was an early emotional lift for the Bruins and the start of a career day for Brown that would end with 182 yards and two scores in 24 carries.
