It’s a ‘W’ for Florida State as Weinke and Warrick Star

Chris Weinke threw five touchdown passes, three to Peter Warrick, for No. 1-ranked Florida State in a 51-23 victory Saturday over Duke at Jacksonville, Fla.--the 297th in the major college coaching career of the Seminoles’ Bobby Bowden.

Florida State (5-0 overall, 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) scored on all eight of its first half possessions en route to a 44-0 lead.

Warrick made all three of his touchdown receptions in the first quarter and threw for a 35-yard touchdown to Laveranues Coles in the second quarter.

Florida State, who needed only seven minutes last week to take a 28-0 lead at North Carolina, took a 24-0 lead 10 seconds into the second quarter on Sebastian Janikowski’s 46-yard field goal.

Weinke didn’t play in the third quarter, but was put back into the game after backups Marcus Outzen and Jared Jones were ineffective.

Weinke, who completed 19 of 27 passes for 290 yards, immediately hooked up with Ron Dugans for an 84-yard touchdown to give Florida State a 51-13 lead.

Duke is 0-4 and 0-1.

No. 22 Syracuse (4-1) had 507 total yards in a 47-17 victory over Tulane (2-2) at Syracuse, N.Y. . . . No. 19 East Carolina (5-0), with a 33-14 victory over Army (1-3) at West Point, N.Y., is off to its best start since 1976. Quarterback David Garrard accounted for 325 of the Pirates’ 380 total yards, completing 24 of 34 passes for 300 yards and a touchdown. . . . John Turman threw four touchdown passes in less than three quarters for Pittsburgh (3-1, 1-0 in the Big East) in a 55-24 victory over Temple (0-5, 0-1) at Pittsburgh. . . . Boston College (4-0) scored three touchdowns off turnovers in a 33-22 victory over Northeastern (1-3) at Boston, the first game in 61 years between schools located a short distance of each other. . . . Marshall (5-0, 2-0) dominated the game between the Mid-American Conference’s best teams, scoring the first 32 points en route to a 32-14 victory over Miami of Ohio (3-2, 2-1) at Oxford, Ohio. The Thundering Herd has won nine games in a row.

Visiting Rice (2-3, 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference) rushed for 309 yards--118 above its season average--in a 20-10 victory over Tulsa (1-4, 0-1).

Mike Thiessen, replacing injured starting quarterback Cale Bonds in the second quarter, ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns in 31 carries to lead visiting Air Force (3-1, 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference) to a 23-22 victory over San Diego State (2-2, 0-1). . . . Nick Calaycay kicked four second-half field goals as Boise State (3-2) defeated Utah (3-1) for the second consecutive season in a 26-20 victory at Boise, Idaho. . . . Matt Newton passed for two touchdowns and Greg Pollard had three sacks, including one for a safety, as Colorado State (3-1) was a 46-7 winner over New Mexico State (3-2) at Fort Collins, Colo. New Mexico State, averaging 428 total yards and 41.5 points a game, had only 193 yards and didn’t score a touchdown on offense. . . . Kofi Shuck caught a personal-best seven passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns for Wyoming (3-1) in a 28-13 victory over Idaho (2-2) at Laramie, Wyo. . . .
