The City Council will vote on a historical landmark program during its meeting tonight.

The city’s Heritage Committee has proposed placing signs at two historical landmarks within the city during each fiscal year. The committee also has proposed the creation of a Historic Landmarks and Points of Interest brochure to guide residents and visitors to portions of the city that have played important roles in the development of the area.

The proposed landmark signs are 8-foot-high posts with the city seal and a brief description of the site’s significance.

If the program is approved, the first two markers will be placed in Sycamore Park and at the intersection of La Paz Road and Chrisanta Drive.

The proposed points of interest brochure gives a brief description of a number of monuments and historical artifacts around the city, including the 1984 Olympic Monument marking the location of the start/finish line for the individual cycling road races and a replica of one of the bells that lined El Camino Real at the Wells Fargo office on La Paz Road.

The landmark signs will cost about $1,800 each and the brochure will cost about $500 to print.
