AIDS Housing

Leadership such as that demonstrated by the owners of the Palms Motel (“Motel Is Oasis for Poor AIDS Patients,” Sept. 27) is crucial to assisting those infected with HIV to maintain their health and independence, especially those grappling with poverty, mental illness or addiction. Unfortunately, neighborhoods do not always welcome those in need. Thanks to the courageous leadership of local residents, churches and elected officials, Project New Hope currently meets the housing needs of a diverse population--79% of our residents are African American or Latino--and, pending final funding approvals from HUD, L.A. County and the city of L.A. Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program, we are increasing our inventory of housing opportunities in South-Central Los Angeles to serve an additional 100 people.

The need for affordable housing and AIDS intervention in this part of the city is enormous. Sadly, without more resources going toward housing, health and welfare, stories such as these will have to be written again and again.
