Advanced Micro Devices Inc. posted a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss on Wednesday as sales of a new, high-end microprocessor offset declining sales of other computer chips. For the three months ended Sept. 26, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company reported a net loss of $105.5 million, or 72 cents a share, compared with a net gain of $1 million, or 1 cent per share, for the comparable period a year earlier. Wall Street had been expecting a loss of 97 cents a share, according to a survey of analysts by First Call Corp./Thompson Financial. Revenue fell 3.5% to $662.2 million from $685.9 million a year ago. The results were released after the close of financial markets Wednesday. Shares of AMD closed at $19.44, up 81 cents on the New York Stock Exchange.
