Churches Plan Oxnard Celebration

* A “Revitalizing Oxnard Celebration Kickoff” will be held from noon to 4 p.m. today at Oxnard’s Church at the Crossroads. Seven local churches will participate, along with Mayor Manuel Lopez and Pastor Roberto Rolon as guest speakers.

The host churches are Hermanos Unidos en Christo, Mount Salem Bible Baptist Church, Oxnard Korean Baptist Church and Church at the Crossroads. Participating churches include St. Paul Baptist Church, Messiah Foursquare Church and Cornerstone Church--Jerusalem Project.

“It will be a great time of music, food and unity in a get-to-know-you afternoon,” said Crossroads Pastor Bob Borger.

Music will be provided by Kristofer, Los Redimidos, Circle of Friends and Nueva Jerusalem. KMRO (90.3) will broadcast live from the site.

Debate and Sunday Brunch

* The Ventura County Jewish Council-Temple Beth Torah brotherhood kicks off its 37th year of Sunday brunches at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Ventura with “Brotherhood, Lox, Bagels and Controversy” as its topic, featuring a debate on a church construction project on Ventura farmland, which will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot. The event is open to the public.

Urban planning author Bill Fulton will moderate the event. James Rupp Jr. and Steve Bennett, co-founder of SOAR, will debate.

Church to Honor 2 Pastors

* In conjunction with Clergy Appreciation Month, Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Thousand Oaks will honor pastors Timothy Beal and Dana Shaw on Sunday for their commitment to the church and community.

Special guest speaker at both the 9 and 10:45 a.m. worship services will be author Tony Campolo, who also hosts a weekly religious TV show.

Rainbow Sunday Celebration

* St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard will celebrate Rainbow Sunday this Sunday beginning at 10 a.m., joining together with the Oxnard Community Filipino Church and St. Paul’s Japanese-language ministry.

The guest preacher will be the Rev. Dave Marcelo, pastor of the Filipino congregation at the Wilshire United Methodist Church.

The service will feature a number of languages, and a potluck Rainbow dinner will be served after the service, with everyone bringing foods from their heritage.

Jewish Artists’ Show and Sale

* Congregation Am HaYam in Oxnard will present the work of several Ventura County artists Sunday in a member’s home and garden.

The show and sale will feature the work of Jewish artists in stone and bronze sculptures, ceramics, silk painting, pastels, glass and mixed media.

A $5 admission charge at the 1 to 5 p.m. show will include refreshments.

Bible Study Program to Begin

* A fall Bible study program will begin Tuesday at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church in Thousand Oaks and run through January. Called “No Greater Love,” the program will be held Tuesdays from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. in the church hall.

The program’s text may be purchased at the first meeting for $10.

Free child care will be available for preschoolers.

Academy’s Fall Semester to Open

* The official opening of the fall semester at the Conejo Jewish Academy in Agoura Hills will begin with guest speaker and radio host Dennis Prager, who will lecture on the book “The Gifts of the Jews” at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza Hotel on Tuesday. The lecture begins at 8 p.m.

Chabad Torah Class Resuming

* Rabbi Moshe Bryski, director of Chabad of the Conejo, will begin his seventh year of teaching a Wednesday afternoon Bible (Torah) class next week. The class has grown from two students the first year to 200 participants last year.

The study group meets at 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Conejo Jewish Academy, 30345 Canwood St., in Agoura Hills. The first week’s topic will be “The Ten Commandments and the Sinai Revelation.”

A salad lunch follows the one-hour class. No fee or reservation is necessary.

Bethel Lecture Series Continues

* Pastor Craig Johnson of Bethel Christian Fellowship in Agoura Hills will continue the Bethel Forum with his second of a five-part lecture series addressing “Ultimate Concerns” from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Tibetan Path to Enlightenment

* The Ojai Valley Dharma Center offers a weekend seminar to the public called “The Lineage of Awakening.” The seminar, to be held Oct. 16 and 17, will explore the “Kagyu Lineage Supplication,” which is a Tibetan song-poem about the path to enlightenment.

The weekend will include meditation instruction, sitting and walking meditation, discussion groups and lectures by Patrick Sweeney, a lineage holder of the Kagyu line of Tibetan Buddhism.

‘Handicapables’ to Meet

* The Ventura County Handicapables meeting for the physically disabled is set for Oct. 16 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, 2464 E. Ojai Ave., in Ojai. All faiths are invited.

Conejo Valley Jewish Craft Fair

* The first Conejo Valley Jewish Craft Fair will be held Oct. 17 on the grounds outside Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks.

Artisans from throughout the area will display their wares, including ceramics, glass votives, stained glass, bar and bat mitzvah photo albums, quilts and more.

Panel Discussion on Faith

* First United Methodist Church in Ventura will hold a panel discussion on “What My Faith Means to Me” on Oct. 18.

The 7 p.m. program will have local presenters from the Bahai faith, Roman Catholicism, Seventh-day Adventism and United Church of Christ.

A five-minute talk by each speaker will be followed by 1 1/2 hours of questions and answers with the audience.

* Ventura County Supervisor Kathy Long will speak about homelessness at the Ventura County Council of Churches dinner Oct. 22 in Ventura.
