* The offenses: UCLA has been encouraged in recent days that DeShaun Foster, out for all but one series last week and considered a longshot for tonight because of a sprained ankle, might be able to play after all. He was upgraded from doubtful to questionable by the end of the week, and the Bruins were hopeful that the late start could be the difference whether he gets time along with Jermaine Lewis as the backup to Keith Brown. “You can get a couple more treatments in,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “Time is of the essence.” For Oregon too. Star running back Reuben Droughns remains a game-day decision, but his chances of playing also seemed to improve by the end of the week. Anything that would force the Bruins to respect the ground game would help the Ducks, who already have the air attack. Junior quarterback A.J. Feeley leads the conference in passing yards and is eighth in the country in passing efficiency and 16th in total offense, contributing 277.2 yards a game on his own. His No. 1 target, flanker Tony Hartley, is closing in on several school records. The Los Alamitos High product needs seven catches to move past Bobby Moore/Ahmad Rashad for second place in receptions, 286 yards to jump from third to first in that category and four touchdowns to take over the top spot there.

* The defenses: Actually, the UCLA front has played well. J.R. Redmond had 185 yards in 23 carries last week for Arizona State, with 80 of those coming on one run. Take away that play and he averaged 4.8 yards an attempt, nice work but hardly overwhelming. It came the same day that UCLA recorded five sacks--two by linebacker Robert Thomas--to equal the total from the first four games. Anthony Fletcher played well as a backup defensive tackle but also sprained his right foot and spent several days this week in a walking boot. The Bruins are optimistic he will play tonight.

* Key to the game: If Oregon is without its top two tailbacks because of injury, the Bruins must be able to capitalize by containing Feeley and the passing game.

* Fast fact: Arizona State last week turned a 14-0 deficit into victory by going 58 yards in four plays and 1:10 on one drive, 80 yards in one play and 14 seconds in another, and 80 yards in four plays and 30 seconds in the final series. That’s 218 yards and three touchdowns in nine plays and 1:54 in a 28-27 victory.

* Line: UCLA by 3 1/2.
