Applewhite, Mitchell Lead Texas Rally, 38-28

Major Applewhite passed for three touchdowns and Hodges Mitchell rushed for 204 yards and a touchdown as No. 23 Texas rallied from a 17-0 first-quarter deficit to beat Oklahoma, 38-28, Saturday at Dallas.

Applewhite’s third touchdown pass, an 18-yarder to Ryan Nunez, capped a 99-yard, fourth-quarter drive for the final touchdown with 8:16 left to play.

That score killed any momentum Oklahoma had gained after Sooner kicker Tim Duncan scored a touchdown on a fake field goal that pulled the Sooners within three, 31-28.

Applewhite won the battle between the Big 12’s best passing teams, finishing with 328 yards in a game that lasted over four hours.

Texas, 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12, got 111 receiving yards from Montrell Flowers on four receptions.

Antwone Savage had 100 yards and one touchdown on six catches for Oklahoma (3-2, 1-1).

Applewhite, who committed six turnovers in a 35-17 loss the previous Saturday to Kansas State, was 22 for 47 with no interceptions or fumbles against the Sooners.

Oklahoma’s Josh Heupel completed 31 of 48 passes for 311 yards.

No. 4 Nebraska 49, Iowa State 14--Eric Crouch threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Cornhuskers (6-0, 3-0) routed the Cyclones (3-2, 0-2) at Lincoln, Neb.

Nebraska gained 524 yards against a defense that had been allowing only 215 a game and held the Cyclones, who were leading the nation in rushing with 328 yards per game, to 185.

The Cornhuskers shut down Iowa State tailback Darren Davis, the nation’s leading rusher, until the fourth quarter, after Nebraska Coach Frank Solich had pulled his starters.

Davis, who was averaging 176.8 yards, finished with 107 in 22 carries and scored two touchdowns, both in the fourth quarter. Davis had only 40 yards in 15 carries in the first three quarters.

Crouch, who left midway through the third quarter, was five for 10 passing for 85 yards, with touchdown throws of 47 yards to Matt Davison and 24 yards to Bobby Newcombe. He also ran for 58 yards in 10 carries, including a 20-yard touchdown run.

No. 9 Kansas State 50, Kansas 9--The Wildcats showed it is hard for them to take the rival Jayhawks seriously, as they won easily at Manhattan, Kan., despite setting a team record with 18 penalties for 162 yards.

Jonathan Beasley threw for two touchdowns and rushed for three as the Wildcats (5-0, 3-0) cracked the 50-point barrier against Kansas (2-4, 0-2) for the second year in a row.

No. 13 Texas A&M; 45, Baylor 13--Randy McCown revived a dormant offense with three third-quarter touchdown passes as the Aggies rebounded from their first loss of the season by routing the Bears at College Station, Texas.

The Aggies (4-1, 1-1) had gone 10 quarters without an offensive score and had lost, 21-19, to Texas Tech the previous Saturday.

Safety Michael Jameson returned an interception for a touchdown and blocked a punt that produced another score as the Aggies opened a 17-6 halftime lead on their way to beating Baylor (1-5, 0-2) for the ninth consecutive time.

Colorado 46, Missouri 39--Ben Kelly opened the game with a 100-yard kickoff return and concluded it with an interception at the goal line in overtime to preserve the victory for the Buffaloes (3-2, 2-0) over the Tigers (3-2, 0-2) at Boulder, Colo.

Mike Moschetti threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Stiggers on Colorado’s possession in overtime, but Kelly thwarted Missouri with his interception.

The game was the longest game in Colorado history--exactly four hours--and the school’s first overtime game.

Oklahoma State 41, Texas Tech 21--B.J. Tigers threw for two touchdowns to lead the Cowboys (3-2, 1-1) over the Red Raiders (2-3, 1-1) at Stillwater, Okla.

Texas Tech was coming off a 21-19 upset of Texas A&M.;
