Another Victory For Washington

Willie Hurst rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns, and Washington returned two interceptions for scores as the Huskies beat Oregon State, 47-21, Saturday at Corvallis, Ore.

The Beavers had a 434-347 advantage in total yards but committed seven turnovers against Washington, which led, 45-0, at halftime. The Huskies improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference.

The low point for the Beavers (3-2, 0-2) came when tailback Ken Simonton, the nation’s second-leading rusher, tripped over his feet in the Oregon State end zone for a safety, making it 47-0 with 10:47 left in the third.

Marques Tuiasosopo completed 11 of 16 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies, who won their third straight. Washington also has won 12 in a row over the Beavers since 1985.

Washington cornerback Anthony Vontoure, suspended for last week’s game against Oregon for violating team rules, returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown that gave the Huskies a 14-0 lead 2:19 into the game. Vontoure also recovered one of Oregon State’s five fumbles.

Just 12 seconds after Hurst, a Compton native, scored his second touchdown, a two-yard run midway through the second quarter, Jamaun Willis picked off Terrance Bryant’s pass and returned it 24 yards for a score to make it 35-0.

Oregon State scored 21 consecutive points against mostly reserves during a six-minute span in the second half.

Washington St. 44, Louisiana Lafayette 0--Running back Deon Burnett, a freshman from Claremont, rushed for 110 yards and four touchdowns as the Cougars routed the Rajin’ Cajuns at Pullman, Wash.

Washington State (2-4) won its second game in a row after breaking a 12-game losing streak last weekend. Two years ago, the Cougars won this matchup, 77-7.

Louisiana Lafayette (1-5) managed 285 yards, but rarely penetrated Cougar territory.
