FIVE KEY MOMENTS

Share

1 Memories of last week’s Bruin debacle against Arizona State were still fresh. Remember how the Sun Devils moved the ball 80 yards in four plays to score the winning touchdown in a 28-27 Bruin defeat? So there was Oregon, down 34-29, with 1:16 left on its own 11. Would the Bruin defense fold again? Quarterback A.J. Feeley drove the Ducks to the UCLA 21. There were four seconds left. Marshaun Tucker caught a 20-yard pass at the one-yard line. The clock ran out. The Bruins had escaped with a victory.

2 With 7:08 left in the second quarter and Oregon ahead, 7-3, the Ducks had first and goal from the one against a UCLA defense not known for its goal-line stands. After an incomplete pass, linebacker Robert Thomas stopped Jerry Brown for no gain. On third down, Feeley tried to find tight end Enyi Nwamuo in the back of the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete. The Ducks were forced to settle for an 18-yard field goal, giving the Bruin defense a badly needed boost that carried over the rest of the game.

3 The Bruin offense in the first half consisted of two long field goals by Chris Griffith until the defense produced consecutive turnovers. The biggest one came with 2:46 left. Defensive end Santi Hall, rushing from the left side, blindsided Feeley, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Billy Pieper at the Oregon 18. Three plays later, Keith Brown scored from the three, putting UCLA on top, 13-10. On Oregon’s next possession, Marcus Reese intercepted a pass, setting up another Bruin touchdown that gave UCLA a 20-10 halftime advantage.

4 One reason redshirt freshman quarterback Cory Paus won the starting job over Drew Bennett was his ability to throw deep. On the opening play of the third quarter, Paus demonstrated his passing skill, lofting a 48-yard spiral to Danny Farmer, who made the diving catch on the Oregon 32. Paus followed later in the quarter with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Farmer, who caught seven passes for a career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns.

5 Oregon scored 19 consecutive points to pull within 34-29 with 10 minutes left. The Ducks were thinking fourth-quarter comeback when freshman Nate Fikse of UCLA went back to punt from his own 27. Fikse, recruited from Anaheim Esperanza mainly to be a kicker, responded with a 69-yard punt. A holding penalty forced Oregon to take over on its own seven. After three plays, the Ducks had to punt. Their momentum had been halted.
