Chargers Cut Lineman Mims

Defensive end Chris Mims, who is being investigated by police for assault and robbery, was cut by the San Diego Chargers Saturday to make room on the 53-man roster for cornerback Fakhir Brown, a rookie from Grambling who was signed from the practice squad.

Mims is being investigated for striking a man with his belt and stealing his four tacos after a verbal confrontation at a fast-food restaurant early in the morning of Sept. 27, about 10 hours after the Chargers lost their home opener to Indianapolis.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer safety Melvin Johnson was arrested by Hillsborough County Sheriff deputies in Tampa, Fla., on felony drug charges.

Johnson, 27, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with the intent to sell or deliver after more than 30 grams of marijuana was found under a seat in Johnson’s car.

Johnson was released on $5,000 bond.

Former Minnesota Viking chairman John Skoglund has died of lung cancer. He was 67.

Skoglund died Friday at his home in Orono, Minn. He was chairman of the Vikings’ board until the team was sold last year to Red McCombs. His father, insurance mogul H.P. Skoglund, was one of the original owners of the Vikings.
