Fire-Hit Opera House Reopens in Barcelona

Share

Barcelona’s 19th century opera house, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, reopens Monday, having been rebuilt after its auditorium and stage areas were destroyed by a fire in 1994.

Much of the original theater, with its neoclassical marble entrance hall, silk-upholstered walls and velvet-covered seats on elaborate cast steel bases, has been retained. But a new entrance and foyer have been added, along with computer-controlled stage and acoustical technology. The opening opera for the 1999-2000 season, which will run through July, is Puccini’s “Turandot.” For information and ticket ordering, call the opera house at 011-34-93-417-00-60 or visit its Internet site, https://www.liceubarcelona.com.
