Water Restoration

Share

While I support the restoration of the surface waters along the Los Angeles and San Gabriel rivers (Opinion, Oct. 3), I also hope the equally important cleanup of our ground water basins will not be forgotten. Many of us in Southern California still receive our drinking water from these enormous underground water basins.

Take the San Gabriel water basin as an example. It’s the source of drinking water for about a million people in and around the San Gabriel Valley. In 1984, much of the San Gabriel water basin was declared a federal Superfund site, and many area wells have since been shut down because of chemical contamination of the water. Will the cleanup of vitally important ground waters such as these ever become a priority on the public agenda?
