A student at Valley Alternative Magnet School in Van Nuys has been selected to attend a national summit on teen violence later this month in Washington, D.C.

Lana Borkin, a sophomore, was introduced by Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) at a Monday morning news conference in the congressman’s district office. Marilyn Coto, a senior at Malibu High, was also selected.

The two girls were selected on the basis of essays they wrote regarding youth violence, said Sherman spokesman Peter Loge.

“The congressman assembled a committee of experts on violence and they spread the word among teenagers to enter,” Loge said. “The kids wrote tremendous essays on the subject and the committee picked the winners.”

The two-day conference, called “Voices Against Violence,” will bring together about 500 teenagers from around the country who will work with lawmakers to draft a House resolution on teen violence and a youth violence prevention action plan.

Members of the media, Department of Justice and celebrities are also scheduled to attend the event on Oct. 19-20.
