Lost Student

LAUSD employees come in for their share of criticism. Some may be justified. I’d like to tell a different story. Last week our 10-year-old son, brand new to his bus route, inadvertently got off at the wrong stop. He headed off down the street and disappeared before the driver realized the mistake. Within minutes she notified his school, then finished her route and returned to the drop-off point to help us search for him.

When my husband reached the spot where our son got off the bus he was joined by the driver, the school principal, the transportation supervisor, a unit of the school police and eventually an LAPD unit. Haskell School’s office staff members stayed at the school. They told me they would not go home until our son was found. He turned up fine about an hour later. He had walked until he found a store and a phone and called home.

We cannot adequately express our admiration for the way all these individuals pitched in to find our lost child. And they find time to teach, too!
