The city famous for its avocados, citrus and walnuts is turning 75. First settled by Basque sheep herders in the 1860s, La Habra will celebrate the anniversary of its incorporation Jan. 20.
But the party is still in the planning stages. About 60 La Habra residents, including a core group of about seven representatives from cultural and other organizations in the city, are putting together a yearlong calendar of events.
The city approved an $11,000 expenditure for the committee to cover planning costs. The festivities surrounding the anniversary are geared toward all age groups, said David De Leon, the city’s recreation manager.
Events include a Jan. 20 birthday bash at the La Habra community center, and an exhibit showcasing vintage photographs and artifacts from the city’s early settlers.
