The Sanctuary Sculpture Garden will host an all-day, hands-on workshop Saturday on making medicine sticks.

“A medicine stick is a ceremonial piece that people in most Native American tribes have,” said Anne Weiler, the garden’s director. “It is used by the medicine man or the elder of the tribe.”

The workshop, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., begins with a Native Ch’i Morning Praise, a combination of Tai Chi meditation and a blessing to make the day go well, Weiler said.

Participants will then choose a 5- to 6-foot-long piece of Manzanita wood for their medicine stick.

Weiler said the sticks are also a personal and functional piece for anyone. Participants will then personalize the sticks by decorating them with beads, feathers and animal designs based on an animal totem reading.

The workshop will be held at the garden, 1377 Lewellyn Drive. Those interested should call Weiler at (949) 494-7734 to make a reservation. The cost is $85.
