Unwanted Wall Raises Concerns

* Re “City Orders Halt to New Front Fences,” Sept. 21:

Santa Ana is not the only community where fences that ruin the quality of the neighborhood are being constructed. For many years, hundreds of neighborhood residents have enjoyed strolling, jogging, running, walking dogs or pushing strollers down Los Patos Road, which borders Bolsa Chica.

As they progressed, the ocean and open land on the Bolsa Chica provided a relaxing backdrop. The beautiful birds that reside there added their antics to entertain visitors.

After many disputes, Hearthside Homes has begun its construction project at the northeastern end of Bolsa Chica. Its first act was to construct a block wall around the site. A continued extension of this wall along Los Patos would deny residents access to the ocean view they now enjoy.

During the long battle between the company that became Hearthside and those who opposed the development of the Bolsa Chica, the company stated many times that its project would enhance the neighborhood. The “Berlin Wall” being constructed provides a demarcation rather than the unity they have proposed.

Remedies such as clear fencing or revised placement of homes to integrate new and existing communities are possible. If full development of the property becomes inevitable, plans should provide continued unobstructed glimpses of the ocean for those who reside in the adjoining neighborhood and frequently journey down Los Patos.
