Planning commissioners will debate Thursday whether an additional tower sign for the new Target at the Market Place would just be clutter or would give vital directions to confused customers.

Since the Market Place sign rules allow for only one tower sign to face the same direction, Target’s request for a second tower facing Jamboree Road was denied by the zoning administrator in August. The tower would advertise the name of the chain and its signature bull’s-eye in red neon.

Now, Pacific Neon Co., which submitted the request, has asked the Planning Commission to overturn that decision.

But the North Irvine Village Assn. said the tower would only confuse drivers, leading them to believe the sign indicated a store entrance when it does not, directors said in a letter. They also opposed the use of neon.
