The City Council will hold a public hearing Wednesday on a request by a resident to build a house on his property at 240 Avenida La Cuesta, which abuts two designated historic homes.

Because of his property’s location, the applicant must obtain a cultural heritage permit to ensure the new construction won’t physically or visually affect the landmarks.

The historic buildings are a pair of two-story Spanish-style homes that were designed by renowned architects and built before 1950. Both sit atop a slope about 15 feet above the street.

Although the Planning Commission unanimously approved Herbert Netal’s request for a cultural heritage permit in July, the public hearing is being held amid concerns from nearby property owners about the size of the project and what they claim is its incompatibility with the neighborhood’s character.
