‘Junior’ Gotti Starts Federal Prison Term

John A. “Junior” Gotti arrived by taxicab at a federal prison Monday to begin serving nearly 6 1/2 years for bribery, extortion, gambling and fraud.

Gotti, the 35-year-old son of convicted Mafia boss John J. Gotti, showed up alone at the Correctional Institution at Ray Brook, near Lake Placid in upstate New York, associate warden Dave Chapman said. Gotti apparently flew to a nearby airport, then took a cab.

Gotti, who prosecutors say succeeded his imprisoned father as boss of the Gambino crime family, was sentenced last month to 77 months in prison after pleading guilty on the eve of the trial. Many of the charges stemmed from a scheme to take control of a New York topless club.

Gotti could be freed by Sept. 8, 2004, subtracting time already spent in jail and any possible time off for good behavior, prison authorities said.

He will be permitted visits from his family--except his father, who is imprisoned for life at another federal prison in Marion, Ill.
