Cal State Northridge to Mark United Nations Day

Share

Although United Nations Day isn’t until Sunday, the Model United Nations team at Cal State Northridge will celebrate today with music, dance and a martial arts performance.

“Since our school is so diverse, it’s really a celebration of diversity and United Nations Day,” said journalism major Mahtab Farid, who as the team’s head delegate chairs the weekly mock United Nations meetings on campus.

The Model United Nations team at CSUN began about 30 years ago with 10 students. Today, 45 are in the student-run class. By choosing to be a country’s delegate, students learn about public speaking, leadership and diplomacy while keeping up on current international issues.

“It’s a really neat experience,” said Farid, who hopes to become a reporter covering international news.

Last March, CSUN’s Model United Nations team won an honorable mention at the National United Nations Conference in New York City. Out of 250 competing universities, 32 won an award.

Today’s event will run from 2 to 5 p.m. in University Student Union at CSUN, 18111 Nordhoff St. Admission is free.
