Offensive Line Struggling to Match Past

Share

As a testament to its struggles and inexperience, and to the group that preceded it, the Bruin offensive line has already given up one more sack in seven games than the stellar 1998 group did in 12.

That statistic--though not a surprise since the three best members of the Pacific 10 Conference’s top line had to be replaced--comes as the scrutiny continues from Coach Bob Toledo. The struggling guard play on his mind two weeks ago has been replaced by disappointment in the tackles, after the California defensive front dominated last week and UCLA running backs were unable to get outside. “Last year was exceptional,” line coach Mark Weber said. “It absolutely was the standard we want to set here. But it’s not time to panic.

“The expectation level definitely has been raised. But that’s a good level to have their sights set for. Will they get there this year? Who knows. But that’s definitely what they’re aiming for.”

The current group won’t match the quality of the ’98 collection--with Outland Trophy winner Kris Farris, All-Pac 10 choice Andy Meyers and second-team all-conference selection Shawn Stuart--this season. But the Bruins remain encouraged the current group will one day match the standard.

While juniors Brian Polak and Oscar Cabrera are returning starters, all the players with several years remaining are held in high regard. Two redshirt freshmen, Blake Worley and Mike Saffer, are starting, along with sophomore Troy Danoff. True freshman Bryce Bohlander is a backup at tackle.
