The City Council this week allocated $40,000 to cover legal fees and hire a consultant to help study a proposed helicopter facility at Camp Pendleton.

Many residents opposed to the project have implored the city to sue the Marines over a pair of proposed 3,000-foot landing strips on the north end of the base that will be used for helicopter training exercises.

Camp Pendleton officials insist the proposed facility, scheduled to open in March, will create less than 65 decibels of noise in populated areas of San Clemente.
