Preston Dollar’s a Big Fish With Kids in Foster Care

Share

When he wanted to do a good deed, Preston Dollar turned to the Yellow Pages.

A lifelong fisherman, Dollar wanted to see abused and neglected children have fun. So he found Beta Foster Care in the phone book and launched a fishing program with bingo money from his Elks Lodge.

For four years, Dollar and members of Mission Viejo-Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge No. 2444 have rented a boat and loaded up fishing poles, personalized sun hats, lunches, snacks and trophies and taken 15 children on a half-day fishing trip off Dana Point Harbor.

Dollar, 56, of Mission Viejo, and the Elks were honored last week with an award presented by Beta founder Craig Zacuto. The agency, with offices in Laguna Niguel and La Mirada, recruits and trains foster parents and offers mental-health, tutoring and recreational services to traumatized children.

Also receiving awards were David Russell Ohrn of the Capistrano Valley Kiwanis Club; Barbara Speare of the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club; Susan Ritschel, San Clemente city councilwoman; and Assemblywoman Patricia C. Bates (R-Laguna Niguel).
